Are Killer Whales Killer?

Killer whales appear as black all over the body with prominent white patches above eyes and lower jaw to the belly areas.  Killer whale's flippers are huge and shaped like oval. Male killer whales can measure up to 30 feet long and weight up to 11,000 pounds.

According to National Geographic:
Orcas, or killer whales, are the largest of the dolphins and one of the world's most powerful predators. They feast on marine mammals such as seals, sea lions, and even whales, employing teeth that can be four inches (ten centimeters) long. They are known to grab seals right off the ice. They also eat fish, squid, and seabirds.

So why are they called killer whales?  They are called killer whales because they are the top predator in the ocean. Killer whales are in the dolphin family and they are actually friendly. They are the largest in that family too. Killer whales can see very well above water as well as in the water.

This marine species has been featured in National Geographic and in the movie Free Willy. If you want to broaden your knowledge about them or even want to see one personally, you can check this website. They are very knowledgeable when it comes to marine species.
